Add an Article Template for Pets, Familiars, and the Like

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, if a character in the world has a companion, pet, familiar, etc. (there is a prompt on the character template to describe one now) there is no way (other than that prompt) to add any detailed information or article about the companion/pet/familiar. I resorted to using the character template to describe my character's pet, but many of the prompts don't really apply, as they assume that the character is pretty much human-level (or higher) intelligent, and other prompts that might provide relevant information, e.g. loyalty to owner or something like that, are not available. A template specific to companion, pet, or familiar animals, magical constructs, robots, what-have-you, (or perhaps a subtype of the character template) would provide a better place to record relevant information about them.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would provide a template with prompts better suited for companions, pets, and familiars than the current character template and prompts. The Species template isn't suitable, as it is used to describe general characteristics of a species, not the characteristics of an individual member of a species that is the companion, pet, or familiar of a character.

What are other uses for this feature request?

None.

Follow up

Most people that have voted in favor of this idea have said that a tab on the Character template would be better than an entirely new template. As I mentioned in my initial write-up, I think a "subtype" of the character template (I was thinking of a tab also when I wrote that) would work pretty well. After looking at the Character template quite a bit recently, I am leaning toward a tab on the Character template, as there would be a fair amount of overlap between Characters and pets/familiars. One prompt that would for sure be needed is for an "Owner" of the pet/familiar. With a bit of thought, I think the community and/or development team could come up with others.

The Team's Response

A pet is either a character, if unique or a species if it is generic. If you believe either of the templates require an update or addition to it please feel free to suggest specific additions/changes.

I feel like this would fall under the 'character' template if we're talking about individual pets like a dog name Spot, or a cat name Fluffy. This could also be done in the species template if you are creating an entire group of pets like say, German Sheperds.

I do agree this could be an interesting tab, but so far there have only been a few suggestions for what could be included. I've been thinking about this a lot and have come up with a few further options:
  • TRICKS: e.g. "play dead", "shake paw".
  • PREVIOUS OWNERS: Owners was already mentioned, but pets and animals may go through multiple owners in their lifetime.
  • DIET: What do they eat, what are they fed.
  • FUNCTION: Are they a pet, a service animal, a work animal, a familiar?
  • VALUE: How much do they cost (in the pet shop, or in the market)?
  • CARE REQUIREMENTS: How are they looked after? What do they need provided by their owner? Vet visits? What and when are they fed? Do they need a scratching post? An exercise wheel?
  • Those are all I can think of, but I hope that sparks more discussion because I do think a separate pet tab could be fun.

A tab for it would definitely be the best option for it. The only issue this would cause is if the character has multiple pets etc, but I'm sure that can be worked around.

I find myself bumping into this differentiation issue enough that I'm going to throw my vote in.   I also think that the "Character" template itself could just have the "pet/familiar" options available on it and then there wouldn't need to be a brand new template created at all.

I really like the idea of this being a new tab in the character template. As well as the loyalty idea mentioned in the original post, the tab could possibly also include a sidebar link to an owner or master, and/or a prompt for the purpose or function of the pet or construct.

I think it would work best as a new tab, but I don't think it's entirely necessary as I think you can still make the character template work pretty well.

I say no to the new template idea, but having a review of the character template to include non-human prompts in a dedicated tab like we have already for deities is a good idea. They are essentially characters, they should be included within the character template.

While I do not think that a new template is necessary, new prompts/tabs being added to the Character and Species templates does sound like a good idea. It would certainly help me, as I have a fair few characters with familiars or companions whom I am uncertain of how to put on WA.

A familiar or pet doesn't need its own template, since it could easily be a character or species. But it would probably be good to do a review of the templates at this point and see if any of them need updating; I believe it's probably been a while since any of them were updated in any significant capacity.

It would be interesting if the character template and the species template were reviewed to see if they needed anything to better accommodate pets and familiars. Possible a dedicated tab and several prompts unique to them.   Sometimes the purpose on posting a feature like this and voting on a feature like this is tossing it out for the community to say, I have a need and here is what I think would solve this. This also opens the floor to start a positive conversation. Sometimes it opens up dialog and highlights something that World Anvil can already do but maybe the documentation or examples on how to get there is not as clear, or maybe the feature is close but just falls five feet short of the mark.   Having spent several year around World Anvil I know that adding a template is the least likely to happen as Dimi, Janet and the community have proven and pushed the existing templates in so many interesting and creative ways.   That doesn't mean there could not be a flash challenge for pets/familiar/mounts that really highlights what this amazing community can showcase. So for those that vote I recommend that your approach is not NO, but a yes with a side of however.   I view each feature request as a call for help or assistance on steering the World Anvil battleship.   Happy World Ember Happy New Year   Thank you

It's a neat idea but I don't think it warrants a new template. You don't have to use the prompts in the character template, and you can make your own headers if you need, otherwise character template is best.
