Redo the religion types for the organization article

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, when you try to make a religion, you are met with 16 different article types, ranging from the obvious(Religous, Cult), to the unpronouncable(Religious, Archidiaconate), and this is very intimidating to anyone who doesn't already know all this stuff.
For instance, I spent half an hour researching what all of them meant(which isn't helped by the lack of internal resource to provide this information), and I found that 5(five) of them are all practically the same thing(Archidiaconate, Bishopric, Deanery, Parish, and Primacy), an office/area controlled by that office. This is an unnecessary complication and waste of space in the types drop down. I am suggesting a new list of religious organization types, this being:
  • Religious, Coven
  • Religious, Cult
  • Religious, Divine Host(could also be called pantheon)
  • Religious, Druidic Circle
  • Religious, Financial
  • Religious, Folk Lore
  • Religious, Holy Order
  • Religious, Monastic Order
  • Religious, Office(could also be called area, or something similar)
  • Religious, Established Religion
  • Religious, Sect
  • Religious, Temple
The changes I made to get this new list are as follows:
  1. Merge all of the types that are an office and area that the office controls into a single type(Religious, Office)
  2. Merge the Inquisitorial type into the Holy Order type, since an inquisition is simply a holy order specifically for preventing herecy
  3. Merge the Pantheon type into the Divine Host type, since a divine host is a group of supernatural beings that aren't necessarily divine, but are worshipped anyway, such as ones ancestors, or a fey court, and a pantheon is bsically the same thing, just with only gods
  4. Renamed Organized religion to Established religion to remove confusion, since a cult or druid circle can also be organized
  5. Added the Folk Lore type to represent pre-christine-european-esc folk lores, where there is no central temple but people still held similar enough beliefs to consider it a single religion

How does this feature request address the current situation?

The updated list that I proposed is far more approachable and understandable, due to being shorter and not having multiple types that represent essentially the same thing, not to mention the benefit from removing the barely readable letter jumble that is Archidiaconate. Another benefit is not forcing people to use christian names for their religious leaders(Deacon, Archdeacon, etc).

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! The terms you point out are precise terms that are used in the real world to refer to very specific things. We've seen multiple times how our community wants these more specific terms for the Type drop-downs, so we won't remove them. If you find these terms too complicated or irrelevant for your world, you can skip the Type drop-down and create your own with a key-value pair: --KEY::VALUE--, for example --Type::Religious, Holy Order--

My points wont matter anyways, so won't add more, but I think your idea got unfair deal here, because you 100% right. It is extremely confusing and too specific as it is now. I don't even use it because of how lost I get in it. But yeah, on the other hand I do see the point that others have made already, so I understand where they coming from.

I am sorry but the fact that you are unable to pronounce something or have not read at it should not constitute a reason for the of the people who are aware of it not to use it. Also Arch diaconate (Arch..Deacon...ate) not that hard to understand :P

Sidenote: You can always manually add items to the sidebar, so you're never restricted to the available option. But if you want non-christian options, suggest those instead.

Learning new things via software usage is desirable, and precise language should remain important; there's nothing broken about new terms sparking curiosity. (A switch to non-specific religious titles would be great, but that doesn't seem to be the main point here)

It's a lot less disruptive to add new options than it is to remove them. That would screw up many author's articles including mine.

Removing from the list will affect a lot of people's worlds. I know I would not like it if I had a parish religion and it suddenly showed up as an office religion in the sidebar (or some other change due to merging/renaming).
