Add leap year exceptions so we can have a proper Gregorian calendar

calendar chronicles leap Gregorian leap-year Julian

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, even if calendars in the Chronicles feature do permit setting up leap years, there are no exceptions in regards of skipping years that are evenly divisible by certain numbers (which is how the Gregorian calendar actually works, as well as the Revised Julian).   We are only capable to have the basic original Julian Calendar, where leap years happen every 4 years and that's it, without exceptions.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Adding a new field of "except evenly divisible by" or similar, to avoid such year from being a leap year, would fix the inability to have a Gregorian Calendar in World Anvil.   But if you wanted to take it further, maybe some sort of equation field, or some extra exception options (evenly divisible, having remainders of X when divided by Y...) would make World Anvil able to have a Revised Julian Calendar ("in the Revised Julian version, years evenly divisible by 100 are not leap years, except that years with remainders of 200 or 600 when divided by 900 remain leap years, e.g. 2000 and 2400 as in the Gregorian calendar") or any other complex calendar like lots of players seem to want to be able to do yet they can't.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It could eventually make its way to the Timelines feature too, whose calendars can't even add leap years yet. World Anvil has a lot of potential for complex worldbuilding yet it lacks some basics in this area, and many players are waiting hopefully.

Follow up

It is not true that this has been suggested before, as far as I understand. In https://www.worldanvil.com/community/voting/suggestion/a17dd49b-5aca-4e16-befd-72ab2271e46a/view it was suggested to simply add leap years ("Make it possible to add leap days that occur every x years" is equal to adding simple leap years). It is not the same I'm asking, please, reread my suggestion.
The more I explore WA the more impressed I am with its features. It's definitely not just "a lot of potential"; it's rich in really complex features and it's definitely on its way of becoming The definitive woldbuilding tool. I'd say it's just the calendar/time area that is not in par with the rest in terms of complexity, imo.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We're accepting this for investigation/discussion. If we decide to go forward, it will be as part of the planned Time Update (don't expect it soon).

I think calendars as a whole need some help, but I love this as a place to begin!

I support this. Timelines, overall, feel like they need to be much more nuanced in their implantation. As it stands, you could not use timelines to accurately mark events in Earth history, and Earth history should really be the floor in terms of possibilities.

Alternative for implementing this easier than adjusting the existing calendar code: allow usage of the default calendar implementation of php or (whichever language is used in WA) as alternative to create a calendar from scratch, but with the option to rename weekdays and month names. That way we could have a calendar compatible to our real calendar, but allowing us to adapt it to our worlds.   Checkbox: use Gregorian Calendar. And if you do that, the months and weekdays are preset, but editable (just the names, not their number).

While complicated to build, these do allow for a system that fits more to both reality and our own creations.
