The current gold standard for accessible web design is to describe images in detail with alt text. As it stands now world anvil does not properly enable or encourage this.
Alt Text or Alternative Text is descriptive text added to an image that allows a visually impaired or blind reader to gain the same information from an image as a sighted person. This is an important accessiblity feature that lets visually impaired or blind readers enjoy more aspects of an article.
How can this be implemented better?
I recommend either another field added to the Image edit page, or advanced edit page where we can enter our own alt text for the image. Another alternative is to be able to add alt text in the bb code along the lines of
What are the current solutions, and why do they not work?
Currently the alt text is simply the title of the image. Adding the indepth description of the image to description is a back-up option, but by default this description is only shown if the image is posted as an image block, not as an image.
Putting a longer description in the title to improve its function as alt text is possible, but makes it work worse as a title. This also would add frustration to anyone using a screenreader on an article with imgblocks, because they would get the same information repeated.
Switching to using the description as the alt text also has the disadvantage of being frustrating for those with screenreaders doubling up on information. People may also want to use their descriptions differently than one would alt text, such as adding context to the image rather than a description of what is pictured.
Another consideration is that adding a field specifically for alt text encourages people to take the visually impaired into account when writing their articles.
