Making nothing of the sounds, and assuming the men to be gone from this world, he was gifted the courage to continue. One foot ahead of the other. He couldn't figure out where he was, or why he had come at all. There was a pull on his mind, an angry compass that he had little choice in following. Out of his pocket came a blaring screech, warbled sounds of emotion that preyed on his mind. He rapidly removed the screeching thing, finding a plastic item. Out of the top sprouted a long appendage, along its surface were dials of various sizes. His mind couldn't focus on any one part of it, finding difficulty comprehending the thing. It was thrown into an innocent tree, ending the source of terror.
Terror, however brief, wasn't what he struggled with here. This infernal guiding pull sourced its strength from dread alone. He shyly followed his guide for a time he didn't measure, finding no respite from its roaring engine. The light from above the marsh had diminished; either by time passing or the canopy's work he couldn't tell. Soon his guiding dread became less anxious, and more primal. He lost words and concepts to understand it, but followed nonetheless. The dread lessened, relaxed its grip on him. He lifted his head and discovered why...
A tower. Reaching three stories by his count, it leaned on its side. Like a limping man, moments from collapsing. Saved only by his cane, a withered tree, desiccated, exerting the last of its earthly strength to support the structure. This longstanding reliance represented only by the tree's growth enveloping the top floor. None of the tower's wooden planks faced the same direction. Each its own length, orientation, and color. As if a twister claimed someone's home and had, out of sheer luck, constructed something new.
Newfound clarity bathed Lawrence's mind as a fog within him had slightly, though not entirely, pulled away. Strange woody growths jut out from the tower's upper walls. To him they looked like satellite dishes, and radio antennae. Remembering his own radio, he checked his pockets and couldn't find it. He reckoned he dropped it on his way here somehow, but didn't linger on the thought. This tower dominated the mind, his perception scanning the entire structure, greedily devouring any understanding. He remembered the job, his reason for being here. His gut had told him that this was the target, without really understanding why. The tower creaked, its base groaning and shifting. A door formed of some errant planks; the supporting tree cracking and losing some branches in the effort. Lawrence opened the door, and entered.
